San Jose, Calif.---Nelson Diaz and Ismael Ibarra scored a goal apiece in San Jose State’s (1-0-1) 2-1 defeat of Saint Mary’s College (2-1-0) at Spartan Stadium, Wednesday, September 7.

Diaz’s goal was scored at 39:24 and assisted by Guilherme Fadlalla. Ibarra scored off of a throw-in from Marvin Sorto at 47:54. Saint Mary’s attempted a come-back in the second half when Alex Christlieb headed the ball into the San Jose State goal at 73:43, off of an assist from Michael Johnson. It was the first goal of the season for Diaz, Ibarra, and Christlieb.

Diaz said the win was important for the Spartans.

“A game like this boosts everybody’s confidence," Diaz said. "We looked like we had a good offense after it was maybe a little questionable (in a 0-0 double-overtime tie) against Stanford. We looked like a good team overall. I’m excited about the rest of the season.”

Head coach Gary St. Clair was pleased with his team’s performance.

“Tonight was really a tale of two halves," St. Clair said. "In the first half, we played extremely well, and could have been ahead, 10-0.”

St. Clair said that he discussed all of their chances with his team at halftime.

“We talked about all the chances we missed," he explained. "In the second half, we needed to keep our composure. We weren’t able to do it, and it brought our game down. Saint Mary’s wore us down a little bit in the second half. Sometimes, you win ugly, and this was an ugly win for us.”

San Jose State goalkeeper Richard Mann got the win for the Spartans, credited with two saves on the night. Brent Douglas replaced Mann at 58:41 and was charged with one goal against, but also had a save.

San Jose State continues its non-conference schedule against UC Irvine, Friday, September 9, at 7:00 p.m. in Fullerton, Calif.
