Men's soccer notches first win of the season, 4-1 over CS Monterey Bay

San Jose, Calif. (September 5) -----Randy Poggio scored a goal and assisted on two others as San Jose State University defeated Cal State Monterey Bay, 4-1, in a non-conference men’s soccer match at the Spartan Soccer Field.

Poggio’s goal came at the 73:40 mark giving the Spartans (1-1) a 3-0 lead. The win over CS Monterey Bay (0-2) marked a reversal from the season-opening loss to Notre Dame de Namur when San Jose State blew a 2-0 second-half lead and lost 3-2 in overtime.

Poggio’s assists came on San Jose State’s second and fourth goals. Tim McKinney opened the scoring with his second goal of the season at 10:25 from a Richard Halvorsen assist. Nelson Diaz and Chad Gleave both scored their first goal of 2004 to complete the Spartans’ scoring.

Cal State Monterey Bay prevented a shutout when Daniel Benito scored at 84:18 with an assist by Nick Lackey.

The San Jose State win is the school’s 499th in its men’s soccer history. The Spartans get their first chance at the 500-win milestone Friday, September 10, at Stanford, in a 7:00 p.m. game at Maloney Field.
