Men's Soccer Upended At Oregon State

Corvallis, Ore. - Nick Cukar's second goal of the young season was not enough as the San Jose State University men's soccer team was upended by host Oregon State University, 3-1, on the first night of the OSU/Nike Challenge at Paul Lorenz Field on Friday night, September 4.

The loss evens the Spartan record at 1-1, and snaps the team's five-game winning and seven-game unbeaten streaks, both dating back to late in the 2008 campaign. The match served as the 2009 season opener for the Beavers (1-0) under new head coach Steve Simmons.

Cukar's goal came unassisted at 56:47 to make it a 2-1 game in favor of Oregon State. The senior midfielder kept his personal run intact of six consecutive regular-season games with at least one goal scored.

The Beavers tacked on another goal in the 78th minute, however, to make it a difficult task for the Spartans to complete a comeback, as John Swenson provided his second of the match. Mike Parker, who had created Matt Drake's 26th-minute opener, assisted on Swenson's capper. Swenson's initial strike, at 44:22, was set up by Alex Penny, and served as the game-winner.

Redshirt sophomore Tyler Newman, in his official collegiate debut, made six saves in goal for San Jose State. Steve Spangler came up with a pair of stops for OSU. The Beavers out-shot the Spartans, 14-8.

The Spartans conclude play at the OSU/Nike Challenge against Houston Baptist (0-2) this Sunday, September 6, at 11:00 a.m. The Huskies were 3-0 losers to San Jose State's new Mountain Pacific Spots Federation foe, Cal State Bakersfield, in the event's opening contest.
