SAN JOSE - Dan Fife and Isaias Bardales each scored a goal in the first half in San Jose State University's 2-0 victory over UC Santa Barbara in a non-conference men's soccer game September 3 at Spartan Stadium.
Fife's goal came at the 18:30 mark. On a Spartan free kick, he headed the ball toward's the UCSB goal. The ball was deflected by the Gauchos goalkeeper back towards Fife, who headed the ball into the net. It was the first goal of the season for Fife.
Isaias Bardales scored the other Spartan goal at 29:16. He scored following a pass from Jorge Martinez. SJSU head coach Gary St. Clair said it was a "brilliant" goal.
Spartan goalkeeper Chris Humphreys had seven saves for his first solo shutout and second combined shutout of the season. "Humphreys had a couple of big saves," said St. Clair.
The game was marred by two red card ejections - to UCSB goalkeeper Trent Ulicny and Jaime Ambriz of the Gauchos. Two yellow cards were also issued and a total of 61 fouls were called in the game, including 29 on UCSB. The Gauchos played one man short for 1:07 of the first half and two men short for the final two seconds of the first half and the entire second half.
"(There were) two contrasting styles of play and fortunately we were able to play our game instead of letting what happened on the field affect us," St. Clair said.
The Spartans improved to 2-0 with the win, while UC Santa Barbara slipped to 1-1.
San Jose State returns to action on Friday, Sept. 8, with a 7:30 game against Cal State Northridge at Spartan Stadium.
