Outside hitter Thelma Grétarsdóttir of the women's volleyball team and men's soccer keeper Nedin Tucakovic are the Spartan Foundation Student-Athletes of the Month for August.

Thelma was named MVP of the Spartan Invitational after leading San José State to a 3-0 record, the best start of the season since 2006. She averaged 3.44 kills, 1.89 digs and 1.11 blocks per set for her first three matches in a Spartan uniform, the second-highest block total on the team. The native of Iceland led the Spartans in kills with a season-best 14 in the win over UMass Lowell while hitting a season-best .370 in the match. She had the set-winning kill in the first set and the match-winning kill in the third set.

Keeper Nedin Tucakovic had a 1-0-1 record with a shutout and a key penalty kick stop during the opening month of the season. He had a shutout in his Spartan debut against UC Davis with four saves during a match that went into double-overtime. Then, he came up huge to stop a penalty kick against Pacific, which helped the Spartans go on for the 3-2 win.
