The San Jose State University men's soccer team opens its 2010 season with a pair of home matches in Spartan Stadium. The Spartans host UC Riverside, Wednesday, September 1, followed by Cal State Monterey Bay, Friday, September 3. Both matches have a 7:00 p.m. (PDT) start time.
Coach Gary St. Clair, embarking on his 20th season in charge, saw his troops in action for the first time, Friday, August 27, in an exhibition match against UC Santa Cruz. Though the Spartans came away with a 2-1 win thanks to a late goal by newcomer Richard Wimsatt, St. Clair wants to see more from his squad.
"We need to get tougher and we need to go after teams. We were far too passive against Santa Cruz," remarked the Spartans' coach.
St. Clair did observe training since the exhibition match was extremely competitive and remains steadfast that San Jose State has a "...number of good players who are prepared to play."
UC Riverside seeks to distance itself from a 1-16 record as quickly as possible this season. The Highlanders play their first four matches of the season away from home.
"UC Riverside is a very organized team. They're a big team. They are a team that does not beat themselves. They are very conservative in what they do. Like us they want to get off to a good start," St. Clair said.
Tickets for either the UC Riverside or Cal State Monterey Bay match can be purchased at Spartan Stadium on game night. Ticket prices are $5.00 for adults and $3.00 for children under the age of 12. Youngsters under 12 wearing a soccer jersey only pay $1.00. There is no charge for a San Jose State University student with a valid Tower Card.
