San Jose, Calif. - The 11th annual San Jose State University Soccer Kick-Off Night for the 2009 Spartan men's and women's soccer programs is Wednesday, September 2, once again at the Silicon Valley Capital Club in downtown San Jose.
The event is from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Heavy hors d'oeuvres and drinks from a no-host bar will be served, and coaches and players from both San Jose State soccer teams will be present.
The Capital Club is located on the 17th floor at 50 W. San Fernando Street, between Market and First streets.
Men's head coach Gary St. Clair is in his milestone 20th season in charge at his alma mater. He returns six starters among nine active letterwinners from a squad that went 9-5-4 overall and 5-4-1 in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation in 2008, completing the league race in third for a second year in a row. The group that is back includes all-conference honorees Nick Cukar, Colby Moore and Josh Boemecke. Fourth-year veterans Cukar and Moore are joined by three more seniors on the roster in Brian McGuire, Oscar Monjaras and Stephen Cordova, as well as junior San Jose native Ricky Dorrego. Cukar and Monjaras are the team's captains.
Jeff Leightman is in his second season at the helm of the Spartan women's soccer program. He has 16 letterwinners and all but one starter back, alongside another quality recruiting class, as he attempts to guide the Spartans to their first winning season since 1999. Returners include seniors Emmy Belding, Roxy Kamal and Hallsie Pacheco, and redshirt juniors Brittany Boehm, Katie Bonadies and Nina Butera. Kamal and Bonadies are co-captains.
Reservations are not necessary, but the Capital Club does require business attire at its functions. Parking is available under the Knight-Ridder Building.
Leightman's squad (0-2) was the first San Jose State program to officially hit the new FieldTurf inside Spartan Stadium, as the women opened their 2009 campaign against South Bay rival Santa Clara on Friday, August 21. St. Clair's men (1-0) began the season with an impressive 4-1 home defeat of UC Davis on Tuesday night, September 1.
Individual game tickets for Spartan Soccer went on sale on Monday, August 17. Prices are $5.00 for adults, $3.00 for youth aged 12 and under, and $1.00 for youth in soccer jerseys. San Jose State students, as always, can attend all matches free of charge with a valid Tower ID card. Groups of 20 or more receive a discount. Gates open one hour prior to the start of a match.
