Notre Dame De Namur beats men's soccer, 3-2 in overtime

San Jose, Calif.-----Brian Meherg scored twice, both on penalty kicks, as Notre Dame de Namur University upset San Jose State University, 3-2 in overtime, in the season-opening match for both teams.

Meherg’s game-winning goal came at 93:51 as he beat Spartan goalkeeper Dan Benton.
San Jose State raced out to a 2-0 on goals by Frank Mata and Ben Saunders in the first 7:26 of the game.

Meherg converted his first penalty kick of the game at 57:10 and converted the try past San Jose State reserve goalkeeper Brent Douglas. Nearly eight minutes later at the 64:53 mark, Eric Michon of the Argos headed a ball into the net to tie the game at 2-2.

The Spartans had an outstanding chance to win the game near the end of the second half, but forward Randy Poggio’s shot at an open net sailed high.

San Jose State returns to action, Sunday, September 5, when it hosts Cal State Monterey Bay in a 5:00 p.m. match at the Spartan soccer field.
