SAN JOSE - Jorge Martinez scored four goals and added an assist to lead San Jose State University to an 8-1 victory over CS San Bernardino September 1 at Spartan Stadium. The game was the first counting game of the season for the Spartans.
Martinez gave the Spartans a 1-0 lead 3:02 into the match, then scored what proved to be the game-winning goal 5 1/2 minutes later.
The score stayed 2-0 until there were about 4 1/2 minutes left in the first half, when Isaias Bardales scored. Less than a minute later Thomas Gibson scored for a 4-0 Spartan lead. Martinez was credited with an assist on the play.
Cesar Gutierrez put the Spartans up 5-0 three minutes into the second half. Gibson scored his second goal of the game about two minutes later. Martinez then added his third and fourth goals in the game in a two-minute span.
Scott Cox scored CS San Bernardino's only goal at the 61:40 mark. It was the only shot-on-goal during the game for the Coyotes (0-4).
"It was good preparation for our match on Sunday," said SJSU head coach Gary St. Clair. "We got to take a look at a lot of players today.
"I think we came out pretty healthy, and that's what I'm most pleased about," St. Clair said.
San Jose State returns to action Sunday, with a 1:00 p.m. game against UC Santa Barbara at Spartan Stadium.
