Men's soccer defeats Saint Mary's, 1-0

San Jose, Calif. - The San Jose State University men’s soccer team defeated Saint Mary’s College, 1-0, on Thursday, August 31, in Spartan Stadium.

Hiroki Akiyama scored the game-winner, his second career goal, on a laser from the right diagonal to the near goal post at 27:40 to give the Spartans their first victory of the season.

"I saw the goalie shift to the far post, and aimed to the near post," said Akiyama of his goal. "(My shot) just went to the perfect spot."

The match saw both teams have several scoring chances, as the Gaels outshot the Spartans, 23-8, including 18-4 in the second half. Sophomore goalkeeper Richard Mann, who made a career-high nine saves in Sunday’s 3-2 overtime loss to Cal State Fullerton, was a wall in net, making six saves to earn his fifth career shutout.

"I put (the win) on the entire team,” said Mann. “They gave it all they had. We were missing some teammates, and everybody stepped up. I'm just out there trying to show some leadership. We need to stay more composed at the end of games. USF will be a tougher team (on Sunday)."

The match had many anxious moments, including several one-on-one runs in the second half by both teams, and a Saint Mary’s free kick with five seconds left in the second half that went wide left off the foot of Carlos Diaz.

Diaz led Saint Mary’s with six shots, and sophomore Yousef Samy, who made his first career start as a Spartan, led SJSU with three.

The Gaels had seven corner kicks to the Spartans’ three.

"I thought we played outstanding tonight," said associate head coach Ron Smare. "The team showed tremendous character and heart. Without both of our captains, and without our head coach, the guys responded magnificently.

"This was a very important victory for us. It establishes a character base for this team, and shows that we have depth and can win without everyone available. Hopefully, this win will be a springboard for the rest of our season."

San Jose State will host #10 USF at Spartan Stadium on Sunday, September 3, at 7:00 p.m.
