MEN'S SOCCER: Spartans to host CS San Bernardino, UC Santa Barbara

This week: San Jose State University's men's soccer team hosts Cal State San Bernardino and UC Santa Barbara this coming weekend at Spartan Stadium. The two games are the first counting contests of the season for the Spartans.

Friday's match against CS San Bernardino begins at 1:00 p.m. Sunday's match against UC Santa Barbara also starts at 1:00 p.m.

Head Coach Gary St. Clair: Gary St. Clair is in his 11th season as San Jose State's head coach. His career record is 85-96-13 (.438). Last season the Spartans finished with a 7-11-2 overall record, 4-6-0 in the Western Athletic Conference.

Spartans join MPSF: San Jose State has joined the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation for men's soccer. The Spartans will compete in the Mountain Division of the MSPF. The other teams in the division are Air Force, University of Denver, Sacramento State and Fresno State. The Pacific Division includes UC Santa Barbara, Cal State Northridge, UNLV, New Mexico, Cal State Fullerton, Cal Poly, UC Irvine and San Diego State.

The top two teams from each division will advance to the conference playoffs, to be hosted by the Pacific Division champion. The first round of the playoffs will be held on Nov. 10 with the championship game on Nov. 12. The winner of the Nov. 12 match will receive an automatic berth to the NCAA playoffs.

Last week: San Jose State recorded a 6-0 shutout over UC Santa Cruz in an exhibition match Friday night at Spartan Stadium. Lars Lyssand broke the ice 14:32 into the game when his corner kick was deflected into the net by the UCSC goalkeeper. Lyssand added a second goal 2 1/2 minutes later and also scored San Jose State's final goal of the game. Isaias Bardales, Jorge Martinez and Thomas Gibson each added a goal for the Spartans. Bardales recorded two assists, while Gibson, Martinez and Ryan Suarez all were credited with one assist.
