Men's soccer defeats UC Santa Cruz, 2-1, in exhibition

San Jose, Calif.---Ismael Ibarra scored a goal with five seconds left in regulation play giving San Jose State University a 2-1 win over UC Santa Cruz in a men's exhibition soccer match.

Midfielder Diego Soto was credited with the assist on the game-winning goal at 89:55.

“It was an amazing feeling,” said Ibarra, who also had an assist on the first goal of the game. “It was my first goal in Division I. We were down and I was just thinking about winning for the team.”

The Spartans opened the scoring at 26:13 on a shot from the right side by forward Nelson Diaz. Ibarra and forward Johnny Gonzalez assisted on the goal.

UC Santa Cruz tied the game at 50:39 when Julian Alverez headed the ball into the net after an assist from David Cochrane.

“The first half wasn't as good as the second half,” Spartan head coach Gary St. Clair said. “We allowed Santa Cruz to set the pace and we were fortunate to be up by a goal in the second half.”

San Jose State opens the regular season hosting Stanford, Thursday, September 1, at 7:00 p.m. in Spartan Stadium.
