Berkeley, Calif. - The San José State men's soccer team concluded its 2013 exhibition schedule with a 1-1 result against the California Bears at Goldman Field in Berkeley, Calif. on Saturday afternoon.
After a 0-0 first half, freshman Rory Knibbs scored the Spartans' goal at the 55:34 mark. The London, England native, stole a back pass that was intended for Bears keeper Robby Gogatz. Knibbs maneuvered around Gogatz and tapped the ball in, giving San José State a 1-0 advantage.
The Spartans maintained the advantage for the next 43-plus minutes until, with 11 seconds left in regulation Stephano Bonomo got the equalizer. On a scramble in the box in front of Spartans' keeper Emmanuel Espinosa, a Bonomo header reached the back of the net. The time of the goal was the 89:49 mark and Max Oldham was credited with an assist.
With the teams agreed prior to the match that no overtimes would be played so the match ended in a 1-1 tie.
Espinosa faced saw seven shots on frame turning away six. The Bears played four keepers who combined for three saves and Knibbbs tally.
Knibbs was the most dangerous Spartan on the pitch. He had four of the team's seven shots and three of its four on goal.
The San José State University Soccer Kick-Off Night, for the 2013 Spartan men's soccer season, is scheduled for Wednesday, August 28 at the Silicon Valley Capital Club in downtown San Jose's Knight-Ridder Building.
Soccer Kick-Off Night, now in its 15th consecutive year, will be from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Heavy hors d'oeuvres and drinks, from a no-host bar, will be served.
Attendees can mingle with the coaches and players from the 2013 men's soccer team. Reservations are not necessary, but the Capital Club does require business attire at its functions. Validated parking is available in the Knight-Ridder Building located on the 17th floor at 50 W. San Fernando Street, between Market and First streets.
The San José State open the regular season on Friday, August 30 when it hosts Sacramento State in Spartan Stadium. Kickoff for the match is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
