Men's Soccer Ends Exhibition Schedule With A Draw

San Jose, Calif. - In their final exhibition match of 2012, the San Jose State Spartans men's soccer team earned a 2-2 draw against the Cal State Monterey Bay (CSUMB) Otters on Friday evening in Spartan Stadium.

"Our goal coming in was never about this game," head coach Gary St. Clair said.  "It was about (regular season opener) San Francisco on Sunday.  We committed to playing everyone tonight, sitting back and see what they could do. It ended up being a tale of two halves."

In the first 45 minutes, the Spartans out shot CSUMB 10-to-3 and in the first 14 minutes built a 2-0 lead.

Just 2:52 into the match Steven Sanchez got loose in the box.  Enrique Montano fed Sanchez at the top of the six and Sanchez tucked the ball just inside the right post for a 1-0 advantage.

In the 14th minute Sanchez struck again.  Israel Ayala drove the ball down the left side and crossed it to Jonathan Salceda on the far side.  Salceda played the ball back to Sanchez who from 14 yards out hammered the ball low to the keepers left for his second goal of the game.

The Otters got on the board at the 41:14 mark on a shot low to Spartan keeper Emmanuel Espinosa right.  Eric Pratt was credited with the goal and the teams went to the half with San Jose State leading 2-1.

In the second half the Otters turned the table on the Spartans.  They out shot San Jose State 10-to-5 and got the lone goal of the period in the 73rd minute.

Rudy Gonzales tucked a ball just inside the right post, beating keeper Michael Schwinn, who had come on at halftime.

"I think we could have had a better performance," St. Clair said. "When the other team started to get some momentum, we did something you can never do and that's panic.  Once that started, in the second half, we played into their hands.

"At this point in the year (heading into the San Francisco match) we're happy in some phases of our game.  In others, we know we need to do more work. We thought it would take a good month to get to know each other and that seems to be the case, but we're ready for USF."

The Spartans open regular season action on Sunday, August 26 when they host Bay Area rival, the University of San Francisco Dons.  Kickoff in Spartan Stadium is set for 7:00 p.m.
