Men's soccer defeats Cal State East Bay, 3-0, in exhibition

San Jose, Calif. - The San Jose State University men’s soccer team defeated Cal State East Bay 3-0 in an exhibition match at Spartan Stadium on Friday, August 25. The Spartans dominated the match from start to finish, outshooting the Pioneers 26-7.

"I thought that our players, to a man, played extremely, extremely well," said San Jose State head coach Gary St. Clair after the game. "The important thing tonight, was to let our players play together again.

“This is such a new team, with so many new faces. We wanted to make sure that we came out of it with no injuries. We accomplished everything that we set out to do tonight."

The Spartans took a quick 1-0 lead when Julio Gonzalez scored on a through ball from Eric Cross at 21:01. Guilherme Fadlalla was also credited with an assist on the play.

"It felt great," said Gonzalez of his second goal in as many exhibition contests. "One goal a game for the season is what I would like to accomplish. I know that the preseason doesn't count (in the statistics), but it counts for me.

"We were trying to perfect what we have been practicing," added Gonzalez about the Spartans' performance. "This is an inexperienced team with young players. Seeing some of our substitute players tonight, I'm hopeful that we are going to have a good season. We are ready for the Cal State Fullerton game. The regular players and the substitutes showed the potential we all have, to come out on top."

San Jose State took a commanding 2-0 lead just before halftime when following a Pioneer foul in the box, sophomore tri-captain Ed Brand scored on a penalty kick at 40:46.

After a near scoreless second half which was controlled by the Spartans, redshirt sophomore Matt Schembri scored at the 84:00 mark on a right cross from junior forward Savio Carrijo. Freshman forward Colby Moore was also credited with an assist on the play.

Goalkeepers Richard Mann and Dainen Allen combined for the win in net, as Allen made the lone save against the Pioneers. The lone shot on net for Cal State East Bay was by its goalkeeper Sergio Valle, who made three saves in the match.

Gonzalez led SJSU with four shots, while Jacob Morrison and Daniel Perez each had three for San Jose State. The Spartans had 10 corner kicks to the Pioneers one.
