Spartans Outscore UCSC in Exhibition Men's Soccer

SAN JOSE (August 25) - Lars Lyssand scored three goals and Isaias Bardales had one goal and two assists to lead the San Jose State University men's soccer team to a 6-0 win over UC Santa Cruz August 25 in an exhibition match at Spartan Stadium.

The Spartans took a 4-0 lead at halftime. SJSU did not allow a shot-on-goal in the second half to claim the win.

"A good start," commented Spartan head coach Gary St. Clair. "The defense played well. They got a little sloppy in the first half (but) made the adjustment at halftime."

Lyssand put the Spartans in front 1-0 when his corner kick was tipped in by the UCSC goalkeeper 14:32 into the first half. About 2 1/2 minutes later Lyssand added his second goal of the night for a 2-0 SJSU lead.

Isaias Bardales and Jorge Martinez each added a goal in the opening half. Thomas Gibson gave the Spartans a 5-0 lead, then Lyssand added his third goal of the night to end the scoring.

The first counting match for San Jose State is next Friday, Sept. 1, when the Spartans host Cal State San Bernardino beginning at 1:00 p.m. at Spartan Stadium.
