San Francisco, Calif.-----Midfielder Frank Sanfilippo received the San Francisco Olympic Club's 2003 "Soccer Award for Excellence" at the annual Bay Area men's soccer media day held recently. The award recognizes the top player among the six Division I schools.

"I'm extremely proud of Frank. He's been of real service to our team and has served as team captain the last three years. He is the only player in my time to be a captain as asophomore," said San Jose State coach Gary St. Clair.

"I'm proud he is staying in school and think he'll be a wonderful pro at the end of his college career," the Spartan coach added.

Sanfilippo was a sixth round draft choice of the San Jose Earthquakes in the 2003 Major League Soccer draft. Declining the immediate opportunity to turn professional, he opted to become the first member of his family to complete a college education and earn his fourth season of playing eligibility.

The San Diego resident was a first-team All-Mountain Pacific Sports Federation selection last year.
