Men's soccer defeats Otters, 2-1, in double overtime

San Jose, Calif. - The San Jose State University men’s soccer team defeated Cal State Monterey Bay 2-1 in double overtime in an exhibition match at Spartan Stadium on Friday, August 18.

Junior midfielder Guilherme Fadlalla scored on a perfectly placed free kick just inside the upper right corner of the goal at 104:47 of double overtime to give the Spartans the victory.

"I've been practicing (free kicks) since I was a little kid," said Fadlalla about his game-winner. "I try to put a lot of focus on the ball before I take them. I knew it was going in when I kicked it. I feel confident before taking freekicks. I know I'm going to score."

San Jose State scored first in the contest, when Julio Gonzalez received a through ball from Ben Saunders, rounded Otter goalie Mathew Lege to the left and booted the ball in the net at 24:20 to give the Spartans an early lead.

"I'm excited," remarked Gonzalez about his opening goal. "It's the first game of the season, and the first of many to come. We've shown improvement overall from the start of training."

The Spartans led 1-0 until CSUMB’s Kyle Satow tied the game at one goal apiece, redirecting his own rebound after receiving a cross from the left from Eric Nabors at the 59:55 mark.

The game stayed knotted at one through the first overtime, and for the first five minutes of the second extra session until Fadlalla ended the two-hour marathon of a match.

"It's important to keep a game like this in perspective," said Spartan head coach Gary St. Clair. "If this is a step in the right direction for us, then it is a good result. We are a brand-new product. We're just feeling our way around right now. I am pleased with the way that we stuck together all the way through the overtime. I am happy to see the win."

The Spartans and Otters each had five shots on goal, while SJSU attempted 15 shots to the Otters’ 10 attempts in the match. Sophomore midfielder Hiroki Akiyama led the Spartans with four shots. Gonzalez had two shots on goal.

San Jose State will play another exhibition match next Friday, August 25, in Spartan Stadium. The Spartans will take on Cal State East Bay at 7:00 p.m.
