2016 Men’s Soccer Schedule Released

Aug. 1, 2016

SAN JOSE, Calif. – Home matches against defending Western Athletic Conference (WAC) champion Seattle University and conference runner-up Utah Valley, along with a night game under the lights in Spartan Stadium against the University of California-Riverside highlight the 2016 San José State University men’s soccer home schedule.  A road contest against the defending national champion Stanford, highlight the away schedule.  Men’s soccer head coach Simon Tobin made the announcement.

“Two of the WAC’s strongest teams in Seattle and Utah Valley are both at San José State.  How successful we can be will be gauged by those two games, because both will be very good again, if not better,” said Tobin about the two WAC teams that played in last year’s NCAA Tournament.

Along with Seattle University (Oct. 6) and Utah Valley (Oct. 23), other conference home games include Houston Baptist (Oct. 14), Incarnate Word (Oct. 16) and the regular season finale against Texas-Rio Grande Valley (Nov. 5).

The WAC schedule consists of a 10-match single round-robin format for all 11 WAC teams for a total of 10 matches.  The points system will be used to determine conference standings where each team will receive three points for a win and one point for a tie.  The top six teams, not including Grand Canyon and Incarnate Word which are not post-season eligible as they transition to the NCAA Division I level, will advance to the WAC tournament (Nov. 10 – 13).

To prepare for the rigors of the conference schedule, the Spartans will play nine non-conference games including road games against defending NCAA champion Stanford (Sept. 10) and NCAA Tournament qualifier, Santa Clara (Sept. 28).

“It's a very difficult non-conference schedule being on the road for five of the first six games,” said Tobin.

“We also want to get a good crowd for the Friday night UC-Riverside game in the stadium.”

The Friday night match against UC-Riverside will be played in Spartan Stadium.

In all, the Spartans will play in 19 regular season games with eight at home and 11 on the road with one regionally televised game by the Pac-12 Network against Stanford.

An exhibition match will kick off the season on the road against Saint Mary’s (Aug. 21).
