Men's soccer raises over $10,000 at annual golf tournament

The San Jose State University men's soccer team's annual golf tournament raised over $10,000 Monday at the Sunol Golf Course. The team also honored three former Spartans with their Lifetime Achievement Award.

Over 150 people were in attendance at the awards banquet held after the tournament. Nick Nicolas, Fred Nourzad and John Smillie were honored with the Lifetime Achievement Award for their impact on and off the field with the men's soccer program.

Nicolas played with the Spartans in 1971 and 1972 and went on to play for the Portland Timbers of the North American Soccer League. Nourzad played from 1967-68, earning first team All-American honors in 1968. Smillie spent the 1974 and 1975 seasons with the Spartans and earned honorable mention All-American honors in 1975. He also played in the NASL with the original San Jose Earthquakes.

The Spartans will begin the 2003 season at home at 7:00 p.m. on Monday, August 25 in an exhibition match against CS Monterey Bay and officially kick off the season against Notre Dame de Namur on Friday, August 29 at 7:30 p.m. Both matches will be held at Spartan Stadium.
