Men's Soccer Match Against Sacramento State Ends in Scoreless Tie

SAN JOSE, Calif.—The San Jose State men’s soccer team ended its match Sunday afternoon against Sacramento State in a scoreless tie after double overtime at Spartan Stadium. The stars of the afternoon were the two team’s goalkeepers who combined on 18 saves in 120 minutes of play.

The two teams came close to breaking the tie, but solid goaltending kept the score knotted up 0-0. The Spartans’ junior goalkeeper Daniel Benton stopped 11 of the 13 shots-on-goal he faced on his way to earning his second solo shutout of the season.

In the first overtime, Benton faced a barrage of shots and produced two saves and was aided by two team saves from the Spartan defense preventing the Hornets from winning the game.

The Hornets’ senior goalkeeper Leo Marin faced eight Spartan shots-on-goal saving seven and had one team save to help preserve his second shutout of the season.

The tie improves the Hornets record to 2-6-4 overall and 1-1-2 in Mountain Pacific Sports Federation games this year.

The Spartans improve to 7-5-1 overall and 1-1-1 in MPSF games. The Spartans will head to Fresno to face the Fresno State Bulldogs in a next Sunday afternoon for a 3:00 p.m. MPSF conference match.
