Men's Soccer Team Loses to No. 2 Ranked Stanford

SAN JOSE, Calif—The San Jose State men’s soccer team lost at No. 2 ranked Stanford, 4-1, Thursday night. San Jose State’s Lars Lyssand scored the first goal of the match and just the second goal scored against Stanford this season.

Spartan Midfielder Sven Juhlin fed the ball to Lyssand to score the lone San Jose State goal, Lyssand’s ninth of the season, at 16:33. The goal was the first allowed by the Stanford defense in 264 consecutive minutes spanning three games.

The Spartan defense was unable to hold the lead as the Cardinal offense scored three goals in five minutes.

Stanford’s Todd Dunivant assisted on the first two goals feeding the ball to Mike Wilson to tied the match at 32:14 and then helped Derek Shanahan score less than four minutes later. The Cardinal added to lead when Lee Morrison scored at 37:20.

The Spartans came close, but were unable to score again. The Cardinal would add one more insurance goal in the second half to continue their unbeaten streak and improve to 7-0-0 on the year.

The loss drops the Spartans’ record to 5-4-0 this season. San Jose State will host the Cal Poly Mustangs this Sunday at Spartan Stadium for a 3:30 p.m. kickoff.
