SJSU Men's Soccer Team Loses First Match of Season to California

SAN JOSE, Calif.— California forward Austin Ripmaster scored two goals in the second period give Cal a 3-2 win over the San Jose State University men’s soccer team at Spartan Stadium Monday night. The loss was the first on the Spartans’ season.

Ripmaster’s first goal at the beginning of the second period broke a 1-1 tie. His second goal of the night came at the 70:41 mark, proving to be the game winner.

The Spartans scored the first goal of the game off Sven Juhlin’s shot 27:06 into the match. The Golden Bears tied the game on a Troy Roberts goal toward the end of the first half.

San Jose State’s Fausto Villegas scored his first goal of the season on a penalty kick at 75:38 to bring the Spartans within a goal. The goal came three minutes after midfielder Lars Lyssand received a red card for a hard tackle and was ejected. The loss drops the Spartans' record to 3-1-0.

The win brought the Golden Bears record to 2-3-0.
