Men's Soccer Falls to USF in 5-2 Loss

SAN JOSE, Calif.— The San Jose men’s soccer team lost to visiting USF, 5-2, at Spartan Stadium Thursday night. The Dons took a 2-0 lead into halftime on goals from Josh Hansen and Ben Stuart.

The Spartans’ Fausto Villegas headed in a goal after a cornerkick at 49:23, with assists by Lars Lyssand and Daniel Castillo for the first of the Spartan goals. Three straight USF goals helped to put the match out of reach for San Jose State.

Josh Hansen started the scoring burst off a pass from Anthony Medina for his second goal of the night at 61:25. After Medina scored less than four minutes later, the Spartans replaced goalkeeper Gilbert Vega with Daniel Benton. The Dons Gerald Hylkema added to their lead with a goal on a penalty kick at 78:31.

Lars Lyssand, the Spartans and the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation leading scorer, scored his seventh goal of the season late in the game. The Spartans were unable to score as time ran out giving the Dons the victory.

The Spartans drop to 4-3-0 overall, and will host the UC Irvine Anteaters this Sunday at Spartan Stadium for a 4:00 p.m. start.

The win brings the Dons record to 5-2-0 on the season.
