Lyssand Leads Men's Soccer In Win Over Fresno State

FRESNO, Calif. – Senior midfielder Lars Lyssand scored his eleventh goal and his tenth assist as the San Jose State University men's soccer team beats Fresno State, 2-1, on Sunday, Oct. 28, in Bulldog Stadium.

The Bulldogs were looking for their first home win of the season, but were unable to defeat the Spartans. The two teams remained scoreless through the first period, then Lyssand scored his conference leading 11th goal of the season heading a misdirected kick by teammate Frank Sanfilippo at 51:50.

The Bulldogs managed to pressure the Spartans and were able to net their first goal in the 83rd minute. Sophomore forward, Joshua LeRoy scored the teams lone goal of the match when Kupono Low tapped a pass to LeRoy, who then shot it past the Spartans' goalkeeper Daniel Benton.

The scored remained tied for seven minutes. With just under 40 seconds to play, Richard Halvorsen scored the game-winning goal for the Spartans on Lyssand's assist.

Overall, San Jose outshot Fresno State, 14-12. For the Spartans, Benton had four saves, while Fresno State keeper, Jeremy Proud finished with two.

San Jose State improves to 8-5-2 overall and 2-1-2 in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation. The loss drops Fresno State’s record to 3-6-6 and 0-3-2 in the MPSF.


The Spartans return home for their last two reamining MPSF matches. On Friday, Nov 2 the team hosts the Air Force Academy and on Sunday, Nov. 4 the team hosts the University of Denver.
