Men's Soccer Team Hosts USF and UC Irvine in Two Non-Conference Games

- SJSU vs. UC Irvine, Sunday, Sept. 30, 4:00 p.m.

The Spartans’ Record: San Jose State is 4-2-0, and 0-0-0 in Mountain Pacific Sports Federation games this season. The Spartans are 2-1-0 at home and 2-1-0 on the road.

This week’s opponents:
USF: The USF men's soccer team improved to 4-2-0 with a 2-1 win over Long Island University at the Santa Clara adidas Classic on Sept. 22. Santa Clara dropped the tournament's final game to Marquette, 1-0, giving the Golden Eagles the title and placing USF second.

UC Irvine: UC Irvine is 3-2-1 after losing to sixth-ranked San Diego, 2-1, on Sept. 23. Recently, the Anteaters upset the seventh-ranked UCLA Bruins, 1-0, at UCLA on Sept. 17.

SJSU against the opponents:
SJSU vs. USF: San Jose State has won the last three matches against USF, although USF holds a 21-9-1 series lead in matches played since 1970.

SJSU vs. UC Irvine: The Spartans beat the Anteaters in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation conference playoffs, 1-0, last year. The Spartans were the top seed from the Mountain Division and UC Irvine was the second place team from the Pacific Division. The Anteaters won the previous game played between the two in 1996, 3-1. The Spartans have won four of the last five games and have a 9-8-0 all time series lead.

Recent games: San Jose State went 2-1 last week, including a 1-1 road trip. The Spartans began the week losing to Cal, 3-2, at home on Sept. 17., then losing at Cal State Northridge, 4-1, on Friday night.. The Spartans broke their two game losing streak at UC Santa Barbara on Sunday after Lars Lyssand scored two goals and had an assist to lead the team to a 3-1 victory.

High Scoring Spartans: The Spartans have outscored their opponents 17-9 in six games this season. The team is leading the MPSF, averaging 2.83 goals per game, and have averaged four goals in each of their wins this season.

Lyssand leads in scoring: Senior midfielder Lars Lyssand leads the MPSF in points and assists and is second in assists through Sept. 23. Lyssand also leads the Spartans with six goals and three assists so far this season. After being held scoreless against Cal and Cal State Northridge, Lyssand broke out with two goals and an assist in Sundays win at UC Santa Barbara. The Spartans are 0-2 in games Lyssand is held without a goal.

One, Two Punch: Forward Frank Mata and midfielder Lars Lyssand have combined on four goals so far this season, and its no wonder they are two of the top scorers on the team. In the game against UC Riverside, Frank Mata scored off a Lyssand assist. In the second half, Mata returned the favor when Lyssand scored his second goal of the game off Mata’s assist. Sunday, Lyssand’s second goal of the game came off a Mata assist. Ten minutes later, Lyssand set up Mata’s third goal of the season .
