Men's Soccer Shuts Out Cal Poly, 4-0

SAN JOSE, Calif—The San Jose State men’s soccer scored four goals and held the opposition scoreless Sunday afternoon, as the Spartans hosted the Cal Poly Mustangs at Spartan Stadium.

The two teams took a scoreless tie into the half, but the Spartans took control in the second period led by senior midfielder Lars Lyssand who assisted on all four Spartan goals and junior forward Daniel Castillo with two goals in the game.

All four Spartan goals would come in a span of just over ten minutes. Freshman forward Sven Juhlin opened the Spartans’ scoring with his third goal of the year at 69:37 after being passed the ball by Lyssand.

The second Spartan goal was set up on a corner kick, where Lyssand directed the ball to Frank Mata who lined up by the far post and headed the ball in for the goal.

Lyssand connected with Daniel Castillo for the next two goals in less than one minute to seal the Spartan win. Freshman goalkeeper Eddie Dominguez was credited with the shutout. The Spartans improve their record to 6-4-0 on the year. The loss drops Cal Poly’s record to 1-5-1.

The Spartans head into Mountain Pacific Sports Federation conference play as the team heads to UNLV and New Mexico. The team’s next home game is Oct. 19 against the San Diego State Aztecs.
