Men's Soccer Ties 24th Ranked Air Force

SAN JOSE, Calif.—The San Jose State University men’s soccer team played 120 minutes, but had to settle for a 1-1 tie against 24th ranked Air Force Friday, Nov. 2 at Spartan Stadium.

The two teams played a scoreless first period, but it was the Spartans who struck first. Freshman forward Frank Mata dribbled through the Falcon defense to score unassisted at 59:35.

The Falcons offense pressured the Spartans’ defense and were able to tie the match up in the 83rd minute. Junior forward Tom Clark fed a perfect pass to wide open senior midfielder Matt Rabe who shot it past the diving Spartan goalkeeper.

The score remained knotted through both overtime periods to end in a 1-1 draw. The tie keeps Air Force atop the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation standing with Sacramento State and San Diego State in a tie for second. Air Force finishes conference play on Sunday at Fresno State.

The draw put the Spartans in a two-way tie for fourth place with the University of Denver. San Jose State and Denver will battle for sole possession of fourth place in the MPSF on Sunday, Nov. 4 at Spartan Stadium at 1:00 p.m.

The MPSF Championship will be determined by an eight-team postseason tournament at Fresno State University’s Bulldog Stadium, November 8-11. The tournament will be seeded from the final regular MPSF standings. The MPSF Championship match is 1:00pm, Sunday, November 11.
