SJSU MEN’S SOCCER WINNER OF THREE STRAIGHT

SAN JOSE, Calif. – Lars Lyssand scored two goals and one assist as the San Jose State University men’s soccer team shutout the University of California Riverside 3-0 at Spartan Stadium Friday.

Lyssand’s scored his first goal early in the first half on an assist from Frank Sanfilippo 3:19 into the game. The Spartan’s Frank Mata added to the lead with a goal at 29:17 off a Lyssand assist. In the second half, Mata returned the favor when Lyssand scored his second goal off Mata’s assist at 57:22.

In their first year of Division I men’s soccer, the UC Riverside Highlanders managed only two shots the entire game. The team has yet to score their first goal or win its first game and have a 0-3 record this season.

San Jose State goalkeeper Gilbert Vega was credited with the shutout.

The Spartans next game will be at Santa Clara for a 7:30 p.m. match this Wednesday. Their next home game will be against the Cal Golden Bears on September 16, a 7:30 p.m. kickoff.
