Men's Soccer Wins Season Opener

SAN JOSE--After only one goal in the first period, the San Jose State men's soccer team broke open its match Friday evening with five goals in the second period to defeat CSU Monterey Bay, 6-0, at Spartan Stadium.

In the team's first regular season match, Lars Lyssand started the Spartan scoring with a goal off a penalty kick at 5:29 in the match. San Jose State could not score the rest of the half despite 17 shots.
Five different Spartans scored in the second half. Rawlston Masaniai started the scoring with a goal at 48:42 off a corner kick by Nicky Bukowksi. Gonzalo Guerra continued the scoring at 52:17 with an unassisted goal on a free kick. Sven Julin scored less than five minutes later at 57:11 on a pass from Frank Sanfilippo. Reserve Daniel Castillo scored an unassisted goal at 71:17, while Michael Patrick finished the scoring at 73:51 with a breakaway goal from an Artin Rodriguez pass.

Eddie Dominguez and Gilbert Vega combined for the shuout for the Spartans. Vega faced the only two Otter shots of the game in the second half including a penalty kick attempt by Scott Muleady.

San Jose State will now travel to Saint Mary's for a 2 p.m. match on Sunday.
