Lars Lyssand Named Men's Soccer Conference MVP; Gonzalo Guerra and Frank Sanfilippo Get Honorable Mention

Senior midfielder Lars Lyssand was named the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation’s "Most Valuable Player" during the awards ceremony at the MPSF men’s soccer championship banquet in Fresno last night. Senior defender Gonzalo Guerra and junior midfielder Frank Sanfilippo also received honorable mention for the All-Conference team.

Lyssand is having his best offensive year with 12 goals and 10 assists through 17 games this season. Through three previous seasons, Lyssand recorded 11 goals and 14 assists, bringing his career total to 23 goals and 24 assists with at least three games remaining on the season.

Guerra has one goal and one assist so this year and has been a leader on the team’s young defensive unit. In his second season with the team, Guerra is also a captain. Sanfilippo has four assists in his third season with the team and is one of only two Spartans to start in all 17 of the team’s games this season.

The Spartans face the University of Denver Pioneers today at 5:00 p.m. in the first round of the tournament. A win would advance the team to the semifinal round played on Friday. The winners from the two semifinal matches will face off for the MPSF Championship on Sunday, Nov. 11 at 1:00 p.m. The Spartans will also play Santa Clara on Nov. 14 at 7:30 p.m. in Santa Clara and will host the Gonzaga Bulldogs on Nov. 16 at 7:30 p.m. at Spartan Stadium.
