Men's Soccer Wins First Conference match of the Season Against New Mexico

ALBUQUERQUE, New Mexico--The San Jose State men's soccer team picked up its first conference victory of the year in a 1-0 shut out of the University of New Mexico Lobos Sunday afternoon at the UNM Soccer Complex.

After finishing the first half in a scoreless tie, the Lobos and Spartans played a well played defensive second half until the Spartans' Dylan Pender headed the ball past the Lobos goalkeeper in the 67th minute. It was Pender's first goal of the season and proved to be the eventual game winner.

The two teams combined for 19 shots, while merely managing a combined three shots on goal. New Mexico midfielder Micah Newman was the only player to get a shot on goal against Spartan keeper Daniel Benton.

The Lobos did threaten twice in the final minutes of play, including a free kick with 20 seconds left in the match, but were unable to convert.

The Lobos fall to 3-6-2 on the season, and 0-1-1 in Mountain Pacific Sports Federation competition.

The win improves the Spartans' record to 7-5-0 on the season and 1-1-0 in MPSF competition.

The Spartans will host the San Diego State Aztecs this Friday at Spartan Stadium for a 7:30 p.m. match.
