San Jose, Calif. - The San Jose State University men’s soccer program grossed $55,000 and netted $31,000 during its annual golf fundraiser, held on Friday, May 11, at the Coyote Creek Country Club in San Jose. The announcement was made by Gary St. Clair, who will be heading into his 18th season in charge at his alma mater later this year.
“This was one of our most successful fundraising events in our six years of having done this golf tournament,” said St. Clair. “Any time you can call an event like this a success, you know you had to have some excellent, excellent people behind you, and our booster club is second to none. I give them a great deal of the credit. It was a lot of hard work, but I think our program and players are certainly worth it.”
The sixth annual event, hosted by the San Jose State Soccer Booster Club, featured tournament sponsorship packages, as well as silent and live auctions to generate funding for the Spartan men’s soccer program.
The golf tournament, a best-ball scramble contested on the Tournament Course, had 120 golfers, with 196 attendees at dinner.
Ken Keegan and former Spartan great Jim Zylker were both honored with a “Lifetime Achievement Award.” Keegan was a part-owner of the San Jose Earthquakes during the 1970’s, as well as the San Diego Jaws and Las Vegas Quicksilvers of the North American Soccer League (NASL). He later served as president of the Spartan Foundation during the 1980’s, and has been very active in the booster club and soccer at San Jose State for many years.
An All-America selection for San Jose State at the conclusion of the 1972 season, Zylker was a two-time Olympian and is a member of the California Soccer Association “North” (CSAN) Hall of Fame.
Past lifetime achievement award winners have included Luis Mintequi and Steve Sampson in 2006, Mani Hernandez and Ovadia Mizrahi in 2005, Derek Evans and Ismael Perez in 2004, Nick Nicolas, Fred Nourzad and John Smillie in 2003, and Julie Menendez in 2002. The “Lifetime Achievement Award” is in recognition of exceptional individual contribution to the San Jose State soccer program and the ongoing support of soccer both on and off the field.
