Men's Soccer Solidifies Defense In Wrapping Spring

San Jose, Calif. - The San Jose State University men’s soccer team concluded its 2007 spring season with a mini-tournament at Stanford University on Sunday, April 22. The Spartans allowed just one goal over the course of eight spring contests, ending with a record of 4-1-3.

In a pair of games with 30-minute halves at Stanford, the Spartans first played to a 0-0 draw with Cal Poly of the Big West Conference. Richard Mann, who will begin the 2007 fall season as a redshirt junior and two-year starter, played the first half in goal. Lewis Sweeney, a transfer walk-on from Chabot College, took over for the second half and combined on the shutout.

In game two, San Jose State kocked off the host Cardinal of Stanford, 1-0, on a Junior Burgos goal nearly 20 minutes into the first half of play. Colby Moore and Julio Gonzalez assisted on the goal. Mann again played the first half in goal, with 2006 redshirt Dainen Allen stepping in for the second period.

The Spartans previously took on Santa Clara and Humboldt State in games with 35-minute halves on Saturday, April 14, at Spartan Field.

San Jose State and Santa Clara tied in the first match, 0-0, with Sweeney and Allen each playing a half of soccer in Mann’s absence. The Spartans then got a first-half goal by Gonzalez, who will be a senior in the fall, for a 1-0 victory over Humboldt State in the second game. El Shaddai Bent and Nick Cukar earned credit for assists on the score. Mann and Sweeney played the first and second halves, respectively.

“The spring season was very productive for us,” said San Jose State head coach Gary St. Clair. “We had certain goals heading into the spring, and one of them was to become a little tighter in the back. The spring of course is not the same as the fall, but I felt that we certainly accomplished that. Giving up one goal in eight games the entire spring, is pretty good.

The spring was a chance to try a new system of play, and a chance to look at a lot of players. I don’t think that we could have accomplished much more, and so I am pleased with that.”
