San Jose, Calif.----The Spartans notched their second straight shutout in spring season and look to sweep the Pacific-10 Conference when they do battle at Stanford on Thursday, April 14 at 7:00 p.m. Capping the weekend off, the revival of the Spartans' Alumni Day on Saturday, April 16, scheduled for 1:00 p.m. at Spartan Stadium.
The Cardinal lost seven seniors from last year's 7-9-3 season, including Bobby Warshaw and Ryan Thomas, both selected in the MLS Draft. Stanford's first spring season match, San Jose State, is presumed to be a difficult first test as the Spartans hold a 4-1 goal differential in their first three spring matches.
After defeating the 2010 NCAA Tournament quarterfinalist California Bears, 2-0, back on March 17, San Jose State drew another impressive victory against ancient Bay Area rival San Francisco, 2-0, under the lights at Spartan Stadium Friday, April 8.
Goalkeeper Doug Highton and Jonathan Lester split time guarding the pipes during the 60-minute friendly against the Dons, with Highton starting.
Ricky Martin opened the scoring in approximately the 20th minute, beating the defender from the right side and shooting toward the far post and in. The Spartans took a 1-0 advantage into intermission.
With less than 10 minutes to go in the contest, Dan Addiego unleashed a bullet from approximately 15 yards out that caught the upper corner and capped the scoring off, and a 2-0 victory.
The Spartans served the Dons their first spring season loss, previously defeating Sacramento State, 1-0, and Cal State Stanislaus, 2-1. The Hornets advanced to the second round of the 2010 NCAA Tournament after posting a 2-1 victory against West Coast Conference Champion Santa Clara.
Later in the week, San Jose State men's soccer eagerly awaits to return one of its biggest traditions, their Alumni Day.
