San Jose, Calif. - The San Jose State University men’s soccer team is continuing its 2007 spring training season, and will next host a mini-tournament featuring Humboldt State University and South Bay rival Santa Clara University this Saturday, April 14, at Spartan Field on SJSU South Campus.

Head coach Gary St. Clair’s Spartans will take on Santa Clara at 10:00 a.m. and Humboldt State at 2:00 p.m. in a pair of games with 35-minute halves. In between, Santa Clara will face Humboldt State at 12:00 p.m. Admission to the event is free of charge. Spartan Field is located at the corner of Alma Street and 10th Street in San Jose.

The Spartans will conclude their competition schedule for the spring the following Saturday, April 21, at Stanford. San Jose State will take on both Stanford and Cal Poly, again with 35-minute halves.

San Jose State began its spring competitive season on Saturday, March 10, blanking visiting Cal State Monterey Bay, 2-0, at Spartan Field. Savio Carrijo, who will be a third-year senior in 2007, tallied both goals for the Spartans, with one in each half of the regulation 90-minute contest. The opener came off a corner kick, with the Otters’ attempt at a defensive clearance getting knocked out to the top of the penalty box, where Carrijo was present for the finish.

Richard Mann, a redshirt junior and two-year starter heading toward the 2007 season, Dainen Allen, who redshirted as a freshman in 2006, and Lewis Sweeney, a transfer walk-on from Chabot College, combined on the shutout in goal for the Spartans. Mann played the first half, with Allen and Sweeney each seeing 20-25 minutes of action in the second.

On Wednesday, March 21, the Spartans fell to the California Victory, a new member of the United Soccer Leagues First Division, 1-0, in a 90-minute game at Spartan Field. The Victory begins its inaugural season later this month, and will play its home games at Kezar Stadium.

This past Saturday, April 7, San Jose State hosted a pair of opponents in 70-minute games at Spartan Field. The Spartans defeated the San Jose Frogs of the USL Premier Development League, 1-0, on a Junior Burgos goal. Sweeney played the first half in goal, with Allen taking over for the second and combining on the shutout.

The Spartans then played to a scoreless draw with Cal State Stanislaus, with Mann and Sweeney each in goal for a half.
