Spartans Roll Past Cal

San Jose, Calif.----The San Jose State University men's soccer team shutout the 2010 NCAA Tournament quarterfinalist California Bears, 2-0, in its second spring season match at Spartan Stadium back on Thursday, March 17.

"Across the board it was an excellent performance," said head coach Gary St. Clair.

The Spartans opened the scoring in the 30th minute. Soon-to-be senior Roberto Casteneda took the ball into the Golden Bear penalty area.  Soon-to-be senior Nick Cashmere was there to receive it and positioned himself for a one-on-one situation with the keeper for the goal.

An insurance goal followed in the 70th minute on another one-on-one with the keeper. Soon-to-be junior Steven Sanchez was credited with the goal.

"The shutout was special," added St. Clair. "Having our strikers score goals is even more important for us in this very high quality Division I match."

California finished 14-2-4 last season and ended its season on penalty kicks against the 2010 national champions' Akron, 3-2, in a penalty kick shootout after both teams tied, 3-3, in the NCAA Tournament quarterfinal.

The Spartans earlier in the week battled Saint Mary's on Friday, March 11. They fell short in a 1-0 decision favoring the Gaels.

Jonathan Lester guarded the net in both games in the first half. Doug Highton took the reigns in the second half.

Next up for the Spartans, the San Francisco Dons on April 8 in Spartan Stadium at 7:00 p.m. Admission is free for all spring matches.
