Men's Soccer Accepting Registration For Golf Fundraiser

San Jose, Calif. - The sixth annual San Jose State University men’s soccer fund-raising golf tournament and lifetime achievement awards dinner, hosted by the San Jose State Soccer Booster Club, is set for Friday, May 11, at Coyote Creek Country Club in San Jose.

The annual event, which has sold out in each of the past two years, serves as the top fundraiser for the Spartan men’s soccer program, and brings together members of the San Jose State men’s soccer community.

Several tournament sponsorship packages are available again for this year’s event, as well as registration opportunities for both individuals and foursomes. In addition, silent and live auctions will be held after the tournament at the awards dinner.

After dinner, Ken Keegan and former Spartan great Jim Zylker will be honored. An All-America selection for San Jose State at the conclusion of the 1972 season, Zylker was a two-time Olympian and is a member of the California Soccer Association “North” (CSAN) Hall of Fame.

Keegan was a part-owner of the San Jose Earthquakes during the 1970’s, as well as the San Diego Jaws and Las Vegas Quicksilvers of the North American Soccer League (NASL). He later served as president of the Spartan Foundation during the 1980’s, and has been very active in the booster club and soccer at San Jose State for many years.

Past lifetime achievement award winners have included Luis Mintequi and Steve Sampson in 2006, Mani Hernandez and Ovadia Mizrahi in 2005, Derek Evans and Ismael Perez in 2004, Nick Nicolas, Fred Nourzad and John Smillie in 2003, and Julie Menendez in 2002. The “Lifetime Achievement Award” is in recognition of exceptional individual contribution to the San Jose State soccer program and the ongoing support of soccer both on and off the field.

“This is our sixth annual golf tournament,” said Spartan men’s soccer head coach Gary St. Clair, who completed his 17th season in charge at his alma mater in 2006. “It has grown into quite a South Bay gathering of not only San Jose State alums, but also soccer people. We are hoping that this year, we are going to fill the tournament up again.

“We have two very, very good lifetime achievement award nominees. (Jim Zylker) is probably one of the top five players ever to play at San Jose State. (Ken Keegan) has been a long-time soccer supporter in many, many different areas, in terms of ownership, in terms of involvement, both with the soccer program as well as the Spartan Foundation and San Jose State Athletics. This is our big fundraiser of the year, but it certainly has become much more than that. It has become a gathering of old friends and new friends. It is quite an event.”

The golf tournament features a best-ball scramble, and will be contested on the Tournament Course. It is limited to 144 players.
