San Jose, Calif. - San Jose State junior defender Nick Murphy has been named to the 2011 National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) University Division Men Scholar All-West Region Team. Murphy received second-team honors.
The product of San Francisco's Lowell High School played in and started all but one of San Jose State's 20 matches this past season and earned the team's Defensive MVP. A stalwart on the back line, Murphy saw more minutes than any other field player this year, 1,648 total.
In addition to being honored by the NSCAA, Murphy was named a first-team Academic All-District 8 performer by the College Sports Information Directors of America after the 2011 season.
A physics major, his 3.99 grade point average is the highest among all West Region honorees, first or second team and he has the fourth-highest GPA among all NSCAA honorees in the nation.
