Riverside, Calif. – For the fifth time in the 2015 season, the San José State Spartans men’s soccer team took the field on the road, but in as many tries was unable to come away with a win, falling 3-0 to the UC Riverside Highlanders on Friday night.
San José State (2-5-0) outshot UC Riverside 13-to-12 and put five of its attempts on goal, but Highlanders keeper Ashkan Khosravi turned away each one sending the SJSU to its fifth shutout defeat away from home this year.
The majority of the shots came from midfielder Jonathan Colunga, who produced a season high-five with two on frame, and striker Rory Knibbs, who attempted three shot two of which reached Khosravi’s line.
The Highlanders (4-4-1) got a pair of goals from Michael Salazar, the first at the 13:44 mark and the second in the 75th minute. On the first goal, Salazar scored from the left side in a one-on-one situation. His second was off a rebound, which he tucked inside the left post.
Between Salazar’s tallies, Norberto Ochoa used the left side of the field to score at the 26:16 mark. All three goals were scored against Emmanuel Espinoza who had three saves in the loss.
The Spartans return home, where they have yet to be beaten this year, for their next contest. SJSU will host Bay Area rival Santa Clara on Thursday, October 1. The game will be played in Spartan Stadium with a kickoff time of 7:00 p.m.
