San Martin, Calif. -- San Jose State men's golf had its best round of the tournament and had three individuals place inside the top-25 on the final day of the Gifford Collegiate Championship in San Martin, Calif., on November 7.
San Jose State's 358 (+3) was the lowest team score of the day on the 7,360-yard, par 71 CordeValle Country Club. The mark moved the Spartans up three spots from ninth, to sixth on the team leader board.
"We are a very capable team," said San Jose State head coach John Kennaday. "They proved that today. We played two good rounds this week, but it takes three."
Connor Covington led the charge shooting a three-under par 68, vaulting him into the top-10 individually. He shot 71-75-68-214 (+1) for the tournament and tied for ninth place.
Cody Blickensderfer ended the tournament in a tie for 16th place with a 73 (+2) in the final round, and a 54-hole total of 217 (+4).
Daniel Semmler was a stroke behind Blickensderfer at 218 (+5) and tied for 20th place. Semmler ended the tournament with his lowest round of the week, a one-under par 70.
Justin Estrada ended up tied for 49th place shooting 76-74-74-224 (+11) and Landon Polterock added rounds of 72-81-77 for a 230 (+17), tying for 61st.
Also in action for San Jose State was Thomas Masters playing as an individual entry. Masters shot 79-77-82-238 (+25) and tied for 70th.
All five teams finishing ahead of San Jose State are top-30 ranked in the nation by Golfstat including: #23-Northwestern, #30-Tennessee, #8-Southern California, #17-Stanford and the winner #5-ranked UCLA. The Bruins posted a three-under par 1062 for an eight shot win.
Tennessee's Rick Lamb was the individual medalist shooting 69-68-70-207 (-6).
The Gifford Collegiate Championship was the sixth and final tournament of the Spartans' fall series.
"We have a a lot of work to do before spring," Kennaday said. "These guys know how to play. I need to coach them to be more consistent."
The team resumes action in the spring starting on February 6 at the University of Hawaii Intercollegiate in Kohala Coast, Haw.
