Best 18 Holes for Men's Golf at Pacific Invitational

Stockton, Calif.-----With freshman Peter Gibbs leading the way, San Jose State University posted its best 18-hole team score of the season, a nine-under par 279, in the opening round of the Pacific Invitational men’s golf tournament.

Gibbs fired a five-under par 67 on the par 72, 6,777-yard Brookside Country Club course and was one of three Spartans under par for the first 18 holes. The Granite Bay resident was even par after playing the back nine holes first and was sensational on the front nine with five birdies in a seven-hole stretch. Stephan Stallworth posted a 69 and Mark Hubbard, another freshman in the lineup, signed for a one-under par 71.

San Jose State is tied with Oregon for fifth place in the 14-team tournament. Kansas State is the first-round leader with a 273. Marquette at 275 with North Carolina Charlotte and UC Davis at 278 are also ahead of the Spartans.

“We’re starting to get it into gear. We’ve got 36 holes of very demanding golf,” said San Jose State coach John Kennaday. “We’ve got the ability to win. We’ve got to realize our potential. I’m pleased with our start, but we’ve got to make more putts and hit more fairways.

“If we play our game and not get caught up in the hoopla, we can beat anyone. Tomorrow will be a great opportunity to test ourselves again.”

Under par scores dominated the first round. 53 of the 70 golfers matched or bettered par and 21 posted sub-70 scores.

Nick Deli of Cal State Northridge and Stefan Wiedergruen of North Carolina Charlotte are tied for first at six-under par 66. Gibbs is one of four golfers with a 67.

The 54-hole tournament continues with 18 holes each on November 6 and November 7.
