Men's Golf Tops Kauai Invitational; Hubbard's 66 Leads

Lihue, Kauai-----Mark Hubbard posted a major-college best six-under par 66 leading San Jose State University to the first-round lead of the Kauai Collegiate Invitational men’s golf tournament.

Playing the back nine holes of the 6,954-yard, par-72 Puakea Golf Course first, Hubbard made the turn in one-over par 37. Holing out a wedge shot for an eagle on hole #1, his tenth of the day, ignited a birdie run for a seven-under par 29 for holes 1-through-9 for his 66. He only needed 10 putts for his last nine holes.

“Mark played brilliantly on his back nine,” said San Jose State coach John Kennaday.

Besides Hubbard, freshman Jay Myers was under par for the fourth round in a row covering two tournaments with his two-under 70. Together, Hubbard and Myers propelled the Spartans to a first-place start with a five-under par 283 in the 14-team tournament.

“We played well as a team, but there is a lot of golf ahead. There’s not a lot of breathing room,” added the Spartans’ coach noting just eight strokes separate the top-10 teams. Drake at 284 is second, followed by Gonzaga at 285. James Madison and San Diego are tied for fourth at 286.

Roscoe Valentine and Nick Brown, playing in their first tournament of the season, rounded the San Jose State team scoring with a 73 and 74, respectively. The Spartans did not count the 80 from Peter Gibbs.

In the individual race, Hubbard holds a one-stroke lead over Derek Wallace of North Carolina Wilmington. The top-20 players in the 75-man field were under par in the opening round.

The 54-hole tournament continues with 18 holes on November 4 and concludes with 18 holes on November 5.
