Spartans Finish Tied For Sixth At Herb Wimberly

Las Cruces, N.M. -- San Jose State University shot a one-over par 285 in the final round of the Herb Wimberly Intercollegiate on October 25 leaving them at 859 (+7) for the tournament and in a tie for sixth place out of 14 teams.


For the tournament the Spartans shot 292-282-285-859 (+7) and were led by senior Jay Myers who finished tied for ninth with a two-under 211. 


#17-ranked UNLV took first place with a final team score of 818 (-34) and it was #23-ranked Wichita State’s Hunter Sparks who took the individual title with a 14-under 199.


Daniel Semmler was the low man for San Jose State in the final round with a one-under 70. For the tournament, Semmler went 76-72-70-218 (+5) and jumped up 12 spots on Tuesday to 30th place individually.


Justin Estrada shot 73-69-72-214 (+1), finishing in a tie for 20th place and was San Jose State’s second best finisher behind Myers.


Christopher Lang finished tied for 38th place after shooting 73-75-72-220 (+7) while Matthew Hovan went 74-73-74-221 (+8) and tied for 47th.


The conclusion of the Herb Wimberly Intercollegiate marks the end of the fall season for the SJSU men’s golf team. 


Over the five tournaments: Palouse Collegiate, Dash Thomas Memorial, Wolf Pack Classic, Alister MacKenzie Invitational and the Herb Wimberly Intercollegiate, the Spartans averaged 72.01 strokes per round and finished 23 rounds under par.


Myers, a senior, finished inside the top-five three times this fall and got his first career win at the Wolf Pack Classic on October 3-4.  


The individual win by Myer’s helped San Jose State win their third consecutive tournament, something the team had not done since the 1979 season.


The Spartans get back to action for the spring season on February 1-3 at the Amer Ari Intercollegiate in Kohala Coast, Haw.
