Simi Valley, Calif.-----Jay Myers fired identical even par scores of 72 to lead San Jose State University to a second-place start after 36 holes of the Bill Cullum Invitational men's golf tournament.
Myers' 144 on the 6,787-yard Wood Ranch Golf Course places him in 12th place in the 92-player field. Close behind is teammate Matthew Hovan who posted the Spartans' low round of the day, a two-under par 70 in the afternoon for a 145 total.
Mark Hubbard at 147, Nick Brown with a 149 and Justin Estrada at 150 round out the San Jose State team for the final tournament of the fall season.
The Spartans have a team score of 582, one stroke behind the University of Portland's 581. San Jose State counted six scores of par or lower - the most by any of the 15 teams in the field on the first day's play.
"We hung in there pretty good," said San Jose State John Kennaday. "This is not an easy course to play the first time. It rained Sunday and the course was wet (today) and the rough was high. The greens were kind of small and have a lot of different shelves to them.
"We're near the top. So, it's a matter of putting it all together."
Cal State Bakersfield Kenny Pigman took the opening round lead with a 67 and added a 72 for a 139. He is two shots ahead of five other golfers.
Senior Drew Nottenkamper, playing as a San Jose State individual entry, is tied for eighth at 143. His morning round 68 was he third lowest score of the day.
The 54-hole tournament concludes with 18 holes on October 26.
