Stallworth Ties for 2nd; Spartans Sixth at Del Walker

Long Beach, Calif.-----For the first time this season, San Jose State University finished under par in team scoring and Stephan Stallworth of the Spartans matched his best major college finish at the Del Walker Intercollegiate men’s golf tournament.

In the 12-team tournament at the par 71, 6,633-yard Virginia Country Club, San Jose State finished four-under par as a team at 848. First-round team leader Colorado State rebounded from an even-par second round with a three-under par 281 for an 841 total. Colorado State edged out Pacific, which finished at 842.

Saint Mary’s at 844 followed by UC Irvine and Houston at 845 were ahead of San Jose State.

The finish at the Del Walker Intercollegiate was the second time in four events this season that the Spartans finished in the top-half of the team competition. San Jose State was fourth at the Las Vegas Shootout at the end of September.

Stallworth, the individual leader after two rounds, was one of five Spartans to shoot a one-over par 72 in the final round. He finished 54 holes with a five-under par 208 tied with Colorado State’s Bryce Hanstad. Arizona’s Roberto Galletti was one of three players with the day’s low score, a four-under par 67, and took home top honors scoring a 204.

Stallworth and freshman Peter Gibbs each posted a season-high best finish. Gibbs tied for 11th at 211 for his first top-20 finish as a major college golfer. As a freshman, Stallworth was second at the 2006 Alister MacKenzie Invitational.

The Spartans conclude their fall season, November 5-7, at the University of the Pacific Invitational in Stockton, Calif.
