Spartans Tied For Sixth At Herb Wimberly

Las Cruces, N.M. -- San Jose State men's golf is tied for sixth place after two rounds played at the Herb Wimberly Intercollegiate in Las Cruces, N.M. on October 24.

The Spartans shot 292-282-574 (+6) as a team on the first 36 holes at the 7,074-yard par 71 New Mexico State University Golf Course and are even with WAC foe Idaho in sixth place.

#17-ranked UNLV, led by Micholas Maruri, is the 36-hole leader by 11 strokes, shooting 272-271-543 (-25). Maruri is at ten-under par 132 and leads individually by one stroke over #23-ranked Wichita State's Hunter Sparks.

For San Jose State, Jay Myers backed up a one-over 72 in the morning with a 68 in round two putting him at two-under 140 and in a tie for tenth place.

"Jay was five-over par at one point in the first round, so he did really well battling back to get under par today," said Spartans' head coach John Kennaday.

Justin Estrada fired a 69 in round two bringing his day one total back to even par at 142, while Matthew Hovan shot 74-73-147 (+5) and is tied for 36th place.

San Jose State took Christopher Lang's 73 for the team score in round one and Daniel Semmler's 72 in the second round. Both Lang and Semmler finished at six-over par 148 and are tied in 42nd place.

"We have got to take a better approach into the first round," said Kennaday. "We did some good things out there today but as a team we have a lot of work to do."

The Herb Wimberly Intercollegiate concludes on October 25 with 18 holes. It will be the final round of the fall season for the Spartans. Tuesday's round begins with a shotgun start at 8:00 a.m. (MT).
