Men's Golf 8th At Sycuan Collegiate; Myers Ties For Fourth

El Cajon, Calif.-----Jay Myers birdied four of the final six holes for a third-round 69 and tied for fourth place individually at the Sycuan Collegiate Invitational men’s golf tournament hosted by San Diego State.

Myers, a freshman from San Jose’s Branham High, posted a season-best 54-hole score of nine-under par 207 on the par 72, 6,687-yard Willow Glen Golf Course layout. Playing in just his third major college tournament, Myers was the top finishing freshman.

“Jay competed for 54 holes. He stayed in there today. He had a little bit of trouble in the middle of his round, but stuck to his game plan, stopped the bleeding and his confidence prevailed,” said San Jose State coach John Kennaday. “He showed great mental toughness and his confidence prevailed.”

As a team, San Jose State tied for eighth place with Fresno State at three-under par 861. The Spartans did finish in front of the other two conference teams entered. Idaho was 15th at 882 and Hawaii tied for 17th place in the 20-team tournament at 894.

“We did okay, but we’re still not hitting on all cylinders. It was nice to be in the fray and finishing under as a team is good, but we left a lot of strokes out on the course,” added the Spartans’ coach.

Peter Gibbs helped San Jose State to its finish with his best 18-hole score of the season, a three-under 69. He finished at 223. Mark Hubbard, the top Spartan finisher in the first two tournaments this fall, tied for 55th place at 218. Stephan Stallworth tied for 74th place at 221 and Matt Montez matched Gibbs’ 223 total.

Colorado State edged out UC Santa Barbara and the University of San Diego for top team honors with an 837 total. UC Santa Barbara was one behind and San Diego, two back.

Wichita State’s Dustin Garza, who had a second-round 61, posted a final-round 68 for a 200 total to capture first place. Bryce Hanstad of Colorado State was second at 204.

San Jose State completes its fall season in the 54-hole Kauai Collegiate Invitational, November 3-5, in Hawaii.
