Corte Madera, Calif.-----With three players in the top-25, San Jose State University finished tied for eighth place in the 16-team field of the Alister MacKenzie Invitational men's golf tournament.
Jay Myers, tied for 14th at 207; Mark Hubbard, tied for 16th at 208; and Matthew Hovan, tied for 24th at 209 led the Spartans' charge on the par 71 Meadow Club Golf Course.
San Jose State finished with a nine-under par team total of 843 and was tied by Fresno State. With two-under par team scores and a middle round of even par, the Spartans now have eight rounds of their 12 rounds under or at level par during the 2010 fall season.
California, the host school, won the team title with an 804 total. Even with three players in the top-five, San Diego State was only second at 806. Oregon State at 825, UC Davis at 829 and UC Irvine at 832 rounded out the top five teams.
"It was quite a shootout," said San Jose State coach John Kennaday. "We had three guns a blazing and we needed four or five.
"We had three guys (Myers, Hubbard and Hovan) under par and now we have eight of our 12 rounds at par or better, so we must be doing something right. We played well, but we didn't play great. It definitely was a step in the right direction."
Nick Brown with a 221 for 70th place and Ryan Collins, tied for 73rd at 224, rounded out the San Jose State side in the fourth tournament of the season.
With a final-round 68, San Diego State's Alex Kang captured medalist honors with a 54-hole total of 197.
The Spartans conclude their fall season, Monday and Tuesday, October 25 & 26, at the Bill Cullum Invitational hosted by Cal State Northridge in Simi Valley.
