Myers Leads Spartans At Sycuan Collegiate Men's Golf

El Cajon, Calif.-----Freshman Jay Myers posted his best 18-hole score of the season, a five-under par 67, in the afternoon round of the Sycuan Collegiate Invitational men’s golf tournament.

    Myers has a 36-hole total of 138 on the par 72, 6,687-yard Willow Glen Golf Course. He is the only one of the five Spartans under par heading into the final round on October 21.

    “Jay played brilliantly. He’s just getting his tournament legs going. He’s waking up to what has to happen (at a major college tournament),” said San Jose State coach John Kennaday.  Myers came into the team’s third tournament of the season with a 74.8 stroke average and just one of six rounds under par.

    As a team, San Jose State is ninth in the 20-team field with a one-over par 577 score. The University of San Diego is the team leader at 550. Colorado State at 556, Denver at 561 and Wichita State and Washington State at 563 round out the top five teams.

    Both Mark Hubbard and Matt Montez bounced back from opening round 75’s with an under par score in the afternoon round. Hubbard is at one-over par 145 following a two-under par 70 and Montez is at 146. Stephan Stallworth was even par after 18 holes and heads into the final round four-over. Peter Gibbs finished the day with a 154 score.

    Wichita State’s Dustin Garza is the individual leader with a 132. Garza shot an 11-under par 61 in the afternoon round.
